The last real butterfly on Halden Reach had died in the eleventh year of the crossing, and my sister still kept its wings in a tin under her bunk. She called them a promise. I called them a nuisance, because every time the lamps dimmed she took the tin out and tilted it toward the light so the dust would catch and glitter like frost.

I tended the hydroponics bay that year, among rows of pale stalks that the tutors insisted were flowers, though none of us had seen a flower bloom outside a slate. The pollen had to be carried by hand. Each morning I dipped a brush into a jar of dried dust and touched it to the dark heads, counting the tiny white stars that opened beside them. Ozren from navigation had painted two butterflies on the bulkhead by the airlock, wings like spilt ink, and every shift I passed them and felt briefly that someone upstairs remembered the sky.
When the first green sprout cracked the nutrient mesh, I found a dot of colour on the leaf that had not been there before, a rust-brown speck with two black beads for eyes. I did not tell my sister. Instead I borrowed a needle from the medbay and sat on my bunk with the lamp turned low, copying Ozren's wings onto the soft skin of my forearm, one above the other, with dots scattered beside them like seeds.
It hurt less than I expected. When the ink had settled I held my arm to the bay window, where the stars hung still and the bloom leaned toward a light that was not ours. Somewhere ahead the real air was waiting to be breathed, and until then, two small wings would have to do the flying.
