Ornamental compass motif on the ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small, delicate tattoo of a compass-like motif sits on the outer ankle, with four radiating lines ending in curled scrolls and dots. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The photograph is in black and white, with the foot filling the frame against a dark, softly blurred background.

The ferryman's girl taught you to read a compass before you could read the sign above the customs hut at Sallow Ford, and by the winter the river iced over you could find north blindfold. The hut had one window, one stove and a ledger with a broken spine. You kept your own compass in the drawer beneath the stamp pad, its brass gone green at the hinge and its glass cracked straight across the N.

On the last Thursday of February a man came over the ice with a passport that was in order and a face that was not quite the one printed on it. He set a child's sled down on the step and asked, very politely, how far it was to the coast. You did not answer him. You opened the drawer and laid the compass on the counter between you, and watched his eyes go to the needle, which had swung round and settled, stubbornly, on the sled. You had seen it do that only once before, the day your grandmother came over the same ice with her shoes tied up in string.
You stamped his papers without reading them, because some crossings are not about papers. In the margin of the ledger you made a small mark: four lines radiating from a dot, each ending in a curl like a fern unrolling. Then you pushed the compass back across the counter and told him the north path ran behind the willows, where the ice was thick and nobody would ask him to explain himself.
When he had gone, you took out a pen and went over the mark again, slowly, until the curls were black and even. The stove ticked. Outside the river groaned under its white skin, and when you opened the drawer later the needle had swung back towards the window, as though it too were waiting to see who came next.
