Two sparrows on an ornate key
Realism · Chest · Mixed · Photo
Two realistic sparrows, one facing left and one facing right, perch on an ornate key with scrolling ribbon-like details. The birds are rendered with soft shading and muted brown, tan and grey tones, while the key and ribbons use bold black outlines with grey shading. The composition is centred and symmetrical across the upper chest, with the wings of both birds spreading outward.

The key had hung on a nail in the gatehouse at Scarrow Col for longer than anyone could say, and the sparrows came to it every morning before the bells. Old Mairi Tolland said they were the gate's own birds, and that the key opened nothing now, because the road had been moved down into the valley the year the snow took the lower bridge.

The winter the pass closed, a carter named Dunbeck came up in the dark with a sack of letters for the village beyond the ridge. He could not read the names on them and did not like to ask. He sat by the stove and told Mairi he would walk the high path at first light, though the cloud was down on the stones. She pressed the key into his palm and told him to hang it back on the nail when he came through, whether he came through living or not.
Two sparrows followed him over the saddle. One sat on his cap and the other on the ribbon of wind that lifted from the key's bow, and every time he stopped they called to each other until he found the cairn, then the drop, then the path, and at last the lamplight of the far village. When he hung the key back on its nail the sparrows were already on the sill, quarrelling over a crust, and Mairi said the letters had been delivered, though she had never once seen him open the sack.
