Owl and lantern across the lower back
Neo-trad · Back · Mixed · Photo
A grey owl with its wings fully spread perches on a glowing amber lantern, framed by bare branches, a crescent moon and drifting leaves. The owl's feathers are rendered with soft realistic shading, while the sky and background use painterly orange and red washes. The design is centred on the lower back, with the lantern at the base of the composition.

The owl found the barge the night the lock gates jammed, and it sat on the cabin roof as if it had paid for the passage. Your mother swore it was a bad omen. Your father said owls had been watching bargees since before there were bargees, and he lit the lantern anyway and hooked it to the tiller, where its amber glow could reach the black water.

For three nights the two of you worked the paddles by hand until your palms split, while the bird watched from the bare blackthorn on the bank. The moon came up thin as a paring over the reed beds. Each night the owl dropped a little lower, and each night the wick smoked and you trimmed it, because the carrier coming down from Oxford had to see you before he saw the shoal.
On the fourth evening the gates groaned and swung and the water rose level with the coping. Your father took the tiller. You stood on the gunwale with the lantern in your fist, and the owl lifted from the blackthorn with its wings spread wide enough to hide the last of the sunset. It flew ahead down the cut, a pale shape turning over the channel, showing you where the silt had shifted.
You followed it until the river bent. Then you turned the lantern down and sat on the hatch to wait for the next lock, which was never as bright as the one you had carried.
