Two swallows in flight
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
Two swallows fly in opposite directions, with their long forked tails trailing behind them. The wings and bodies are built from fine hatched lines, scale-like feather patterns and dense stippled dots. The drawing is in black ink on a plain white background, with the birds filling the frame and no colour.

The swallows are back before the snow has left the north face of the pass, and you count them the way your mother taught you to count sheep, by pairs, because a pair is easier to lose sight of. Two come over the col in the grey light, one banking left, one right, their forked tails open like the blades of a pair of shears. Nobody in the valley trusts a swallow that early. You do not trust much these days either, but you have the letter inside your coat, sealed in wax with a thumbprint, and it has to reach Hallam Farm on the far side before the thaw turns the path to river.

The path is not a path so much as a line of cairns that Tomas built the year before he went down to the coast and did not come back up. You follow his stones. Halfway over, a bird lands on the nearest cairn, dark-backed and white-throated, and watches you with the flat patience of a clerk. Then the second one arrives, and the pair of them lift off together and set off down the slope, dropping and rising over the scree as if the mountain were a sheet of paper they were writing on.
You keep the letter dry through the sleet. At the saddle the wind goes quiet, and you see the whole far valley laid out, the lake like a dropped coin, the farm chimney smoking. The swallows are already over the water, turning, swapping places, one climbing as the other drops, and you realise they have never once been going the same way, and have never needed to.
At the farm door a woman opens the letter, reads it twice, and laughs. Her brother is alive. He is coming home by the high road in May. He was always early, she says, and she does not ask who brought it, because the birds have already told her.
