Edith Marr had been counting the fish in the castle moat since the spring the drawbridge rotted through. Forty-one, she made it that morning, though the count changed whenever the mist came off the water. Two of them, the long black pair with the spotted fins, never seemed to be in the same place at once. They kept to opposite banks, one facing the gatehouse, one facing the chapel, as if each had been posted there by someone who had since died.

The lotus came up the summer the old lord's sister drowned herself in the north tower. Nobody planted it. Its petals opened red against the dark water, layer over layer, and at the heart of it two pale discs sat like eyes. Edith's grandmother had told her that when the lotus closed, the fish would swim together and the castle would be free. Edith had taken it for a nursery story until the August evening she saw the fish drift in from both sides and stop, nose to nose, under the flower.

She did not wait to see what they did. She took the rowing boat still tied to the broken water stair, pushed out through the reeds, and reached for the nearest fish with the boathook. Its scales were hard and cold as slate. It turned its head toward her, then toward its partner, and the two of them rose together, slow as breath, and went down beneath the lily leaves. The lotus folded its petals one by one until only the white centre showed.

In the morning the moat was flat and brown and empty. Edith walked the length of the wall anyway, past the gatehouse and past the chapel, and found the water still turning at the place where the fish had been, a slow circling like a clock hand nobody had wound. She rowed out there every evening after that, and she never once lifted the hook again.
