Nobody on the Sorrel Flats road believed Tomasz Brand when he swore the wolf had sung back to him, so he took the long way round to prove it. You want to know why an old man walks out past the salt pans at dusk? Sit closer. The wind here has teeth, and it carries sound a long way.

He was driving a dented flatbed loaded with copper pipe, fifty miles from anywhere, when the engine coughed and quit beside a dry wash. The sun had gone the colour of weak tea. Then, from the ridge above him, came a howl so long and so high it seemed to lift the dust off the road. Brand swore it was no dog. He said the note rose, bent back on itself like a river finding its old bed, and then the ridge was empty except for a grey shape with its head thrown back and its throat bared to the first stars.

He got the engine going by midnight, though he never found the fault. Every mile after, he heard that call behind the truck, and each time he tried to answer it he only coughed up the taste of grit. In the end he pulled over at the sign for Cinder Well and stood in the road listening, the way you'd listen for a name.

The wolf came down the slope at a walk, its long mane streaming like smoke over the shoulders, and it stopped a yard from his boots. It did not bite him. It lifted its muzzle once more and let go a single note, and in that note Brand heard the whole wide country answer back, every sleeping hollow and every dry creek bed. He never told anyone what he sang in return. He only said, when he came to the town at last, that he had found his voice out there, and it was not the one he had brought.
