Two wolves forming a heart outline

Black and grey · Flash

A pencil sketch of two wolves with their heads turned towards each other, eyes closed, and their tails and bodies curving into the outline of a heart. The linework is bold on the features and fur, with hatched shading and spiral tribal-style swirls filling the body areas. The drawing is in graphite on a plain light grey background, centred and fully framed.

The snow had been falling since the feast of Saint Brendan and the pass was shut, so when the two grey wolves came over the col at dusk I counted them twice from the hut window, hoping I had made a mistake. I had not. One was lean and dark along the spine, the other paler, with a ragged ruff that caught the lamplight like frost on a fence wire. They stopped below the cairn and turned their heads towards each other, as if listening to the same far sound.

My father kept this hut for forty winters and never once saw wolves cross together. He said a pair would starve before they left one another, and I took it for a shepherd's story until I watched them go down the north face in single file. The pale one kept a body's length behind the dark one the whole way, the way a man keeps his hand near a rope on ice.

In the morning the drift at the cairn was printed with their tracks. They had circled each other there, again and again, and where their tails had dragged through the snow they had pressed the outline of a heart into the white, with a point at the bottom and two soft lobes at the top. The wind had not touched it. I stood with the shovel in my hands and thought about the road, which needed clearing before the carrier came up from the valley.

I did not dig. I walked back down to the hut, put the kettle on, and watched from the window until the carrier's cart appeared on the switchbacks, taking its time, and I left them the pass.
