The typewriter came off the back of the mule cart at a quarter past six, and Ada Penhallow would not let anyone else carry it. It was a Remington with a sticking e, and she needed it for the survey returns, which had to be typed in triplicate before the County Office would accept a single boundary. The land she had been sent to measure lay flat as a dinner plate south of the lake, all scrub palmetto and standing water, and the men who hired her called it nothing at all.

She took her readings with the theodolite each noon, when the shadows were shortest and the heat made the horizon shiver. By the third week she had a column of figures in her pocketbook that she could recite in her sleep, and every evening she typed them at the kitchen table of the boarding house, one line to a page, tapping each digit with the care of someone defusing something. The landlady, a widow called Mrs Drummond, complained that the machine kept her awake. Ada said the e would not stop sticking, and that she was sorry for it.
On the last night she typed one line that was not on any sheet. The final reading had come out so exact that it seemed a shame to leave it as a number in a ledger, so she rolled a strip free and typed 28.4186 N 81.5811 W across the middle of it. She looked at it a long time, then cut it out with a penknife and folded it small.
Three years later a letter arrived at the boarding house, addressed to her in a hand she did not know, asking whether the spot the line described was still as flat as she had said. She wrote back one sentence. It is flat, she said, but the lake has come up to meet it, so you will want to stand a little to the north to see the water.
