Your letter reached the Skerryvore station on Tuesday's boat, and I have read it three times at the table while the kettle went cold. You ask whether a tune can be claimed by a man who has never once put it on paper. I have to say I have hummed the same four bars to the lamp every night since the spring of 1958, when the lens was first turned by hand for the winter overhaul, and I never thought to write them down.

Then I thought about the log. Every hour since 1961 I have ticked the visibility, the wind and the bearing of the Cairn Ruadh light in the brass-cornered ledger, and in the margin of my own night watches I have pencilled those bars where the inspector never looks. Last week I found the pencil had gone faint, so I went over it in ink. At the foot of the page I made a small mark I had only seen before on the sleeve of a gramophone record my sister posted me in 1970.

I am enclosing a photograph of that page. The mark is a C inside a ring, and beside it the year, which is also the year the lens was last serviced and the year my sister's daughter was born. You will have to tell me whether that makes the tune mine, or only mine to keep quiet about.
