221B numerals on the lower leg
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of the numerals 221 followed by a superscript B, set in a serif typeface. The lines are thin and solid black with no shading. The tattoo sits on the front of a pale lower leg, above a white sock and a black and white trainer, against a red surface and dark background.

At the Pellmouth crossing, where the river Ense splits two kingdoms that no longer agree about the weather, the customs clerk Hannes Ferrow kept his ledger by house number. Nobody passed without one. Farmers gave their barn, widows gave their lane, and the bridge-keeper's wife gave a string of digits she counted off on her fingers before she was sure of them.

One wet March a young woman came up the towpath with a satchel, no papers, and a number inked small on her ankle. She pulled her stocking down to show him. Two, two, one, and then a letter B, leaning a little, as if it had been written in a hurry. What does that mean? Hannes asked. A door, she said, that I have never once been locked out of. He looked at the ink for a long time, then let her through without the stamp.
The Commissioner docked his wages for it by the quarter. Hannes did not argue. He went on logging house numbers, and the ones he liked best he copied into the margin in fine pen, with small drawings of stairs and a cold grate, though nobody ever asked him why.
When the crossing closed and the ledgers were sent to the capital to be pulped, a clerk in the archive turned the pages and found 221B in the margin of one March, with a single word beside it in Hannes's cramped hand: arrived. The clerk did not know what it meant, so he set the page aside and kept it dry.
