Typewriter quote on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single line of black typewriter-style lettering reads we're all stories in the end, running diagonally across the forearm. The letters are crisp and evenly spaced, with solid black ink and no shading or colour. The forearm fills the foreground against a blurred blue blanket and a partly visible printed cloth in the background.

The typewriter in the back office of the Lantern Street bookshop still had a sticky E, and Marguerite had learned to strike it twice without thinking. It was past eleven. Rain was working at the skylight and the last bus had hissed away down the hill an hour ago. She had three hundred pages of a dead man's memoirs spread across the counter, each one annotated in green biro by his widow, who wanted them sold before the lease ran out.

She found the sentence on page two hundred and twelve, scribbled in the margin beside a paragraph about a rented flat above a fishmonger's. Someone had written it in pencil, small and tidy, as though it were a note to self. We're all stories in the end. Marguerite read it three times, then tapped it out on the keys so she would stop doubting her own eyes.
At midnight she rang the widow, who did not sleep either. The old man had been a stenographer for the courts before he was anything else, she said, and he never wrote a line he did not mean to keep. Marguerite thanked her, hung up, and pulled the sheet from the platen. She did not sell the memoirs that week. She kept the page, folded it into her coat pocket, and walked home through the wet streets reading the shopfronts aloud to herself, one word at a time.
