Black typewriter-style lettering on an upper arm reading 'Everything that happens is from now on.'

Typewriter quote on the upper arm

Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman lies on a light bed with one arm extended, showing a single line of black text tattooed along the skin. The text reads 'Everything that happens is from now on.' in a typewriter-style serif font with crisp, even linework and solid black ink. The plain background and soft natural light keep the focus on the lettering.

The ferry hasn't come in since Tuesday, so the post office on Ardnish has become the place people go to wait. You sit at the back counter with the old Imperial typewriter, the one with the sticking e, and type whatever the islanders bring you: notices about the hall roof, a bill of lading for a crate of hens, a letter to a cousin in Glasgow that opens with an apology nobody wants to finish.

On Thursday Donald Mackay comes in soaked to the knees and sets a sheet of paper on the counter. He has written three drafts by hand and crossed out all of them. He wants you to type what he means to say to his brother about the boat, and he wants it to say he was sorry for the night of the storm. You tell him the machine has no rubber for mistakes. Once a letter is struck, the ink stays struck, and the carriage only moves one way.

He laughs at that, the first time you have heard him laugh since the funeral. Then he goes quiet and asks what you would type if you could type anything. You roll in a clean sheet, feel the platen take it, and begin with the words you have been carrying since the spring. Everything that happens is from now on. He reads it upside down, nods, and says it sounds like a sensible thing for a letter to end on.

Outside, the horn of the late ferry sounds across the bay. You fold the page in three, slide it into his oilskin pocket, and watch him walk out into the rain with his shoulders a little lower than when he came in, which is as much as any typist can ask of a sentence.
