Black typewriter-style lettering of a short prose quote tattooed down the upper thigh of a person wearing a floral skirt.

Typewriter quote tattoo on a thigh

Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a block of black typewriter-style lettering set in several lines down the outer thigh. The skin is pale and the text is crisp, with solid black ink and no shading. The soft floral skirt and bedsheet in the background give the image a muted, natural palette.

The office on Quay Street smelled of carbon paper and wet wool, and you were the one who typed the manifests because Mr Pike's knuckles had gone stiff with the damp. Every morning the bell over the door rang for the fishermen, and every morning you kept your eyes on the keys rather than the window, where Tom Harrow leaned on the bollard reading a tide table he never needed.

You had rules for yourself then. Keep the ribbon fresh. Never type a name you cannot spell. Let the boats go out without watching them. When Tom finally asked whether you would walk the harbour wall on Sunday, you typed yes on the back of a bill of lading, folded it into your coat pocket, and spent the rest of the week deciding it had only been a manner of speaking.

Sunday the wind came round to the east and you stayed in, meaning to go down after tea. By evening the Mary Ellen had cleared the breakwater for the Dogger grounds, and Pike was tapping an empty berth on the chalkboard with his pencil. Nobody had said where Tom was going, only that the weather would hold for a fortnight, and that the fish would not wait for anyone.

On Thursday you sat down to type an apology and found yourself typing something else instead, slowly, one key at a time so every letter would land: there are worse things than being alone. You pulled the sheet free and read it back. The carriage return was loud in the empty room, and the bell over the door did not ring.
