Mrs Edith Moss had typed the same kind of sentence on the backs of seed packets for thirty years, so when the council wanted the allotment fence moved, she knew exactly which words to reach for. The Remington sat on a camping stool in the potting shed, its keys greasy from August fingers, and she fed it a sheet of carbon paper and a clean page.

Dear Mr Harrow, she typed. The hedge between our plots was planted by my husband in 1971 and I will not see it grubbed out for a car park. She struck the carriage return with the heel of her hand, and the bell rang like a small alarm in the empty shed.

Harrow had a pale scar across his knuckles from the blackthorn he had tried to shift the spring before, and he had never once apologised for it. Edith remembered the blood on his glove and the way he had laughed about it over the fence. She had a thin white line on her own wrist from a rose cutting that went wrong, and she touched it now the way other women touched a locket.

She signed the letter in fountain pen, then added a postscript on the same machine, typing the line she had kept pinned above the seed trays for years: we live with the scars we choose. She sealed the envelope, walked it down to the postbox herself, and left the hedge exactly where it was.
