Script quote tattoo on the back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black script quotation is written across the back in two lines, with opening and closing quotation marks. The lettering is solid black with smooth, even linework and no colour. The text sits centrally on the back, with a dark garment visible at the top edge and a blurred background behind the skin.

His wife Nan stood at the foot of the ladder each morning with an empty basket and said nothing, which was worse than shouting.

The sign-painter came up the lane that Thursday with a tin of black enamel and a rolled canvas on his back. He was called Ambrose Seel, and he would paint anything for a jug of cider and a bed in the barn. Tom asked him what he charged for words. Seel said by the letter, and that the best words were the short ones, because they lasted longer on wood.
He painted a line across the cider press in a thin, flowing hand, the loops of the capitals running into one another like bindweed. Tom read it aloud, squinting. "To live does not mean your alive." Nan read it over his shoulder and laughed so hard she had to sit down on a crate. Seel had spelt it wrongly, and it was the wrong word that made Tom set down his cup and walk out between the rows.
He picked until his hands bled that evening and went on picking by lamplight. He never once looked at the press again, but the sign stayed on the wood for years, the mistake plain for anyone who cared to read it, and the apples came in heavy and gold.
