UFO, envelope and heart tattoos on a limb
Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo
The photograph shows a cluster of tattoos on skin, centred on a black outlined flying saucer with grey shading and a small figure beneath it, surrounded by small stars and dots. An envelope with a red heart seal and a grey shaded flap sits to the right, with a red and blue heart at the top right and wavy black lines along the left. The ink mixes bold black outlines with grey shading, red, blue and yellow fills, and the tattoos fill the frame closely.

The envelope came up the path on a Tuesday, pinned under a stone so the wind couldn't have it, and you knew the handwriting before you knew the stamp, because the N was looped the way your father used to loop his. The post boat hadn't crossed to Sgarbh since the autumn gales, so Mrs Ferrier must have walked it up the hill herself, grumbling all the way.

Inside was a single sheet folded in thirds and a line in pencil: Meet me at the cairn when the saucer lights the bay. Below it someone had drawn a small figure with its arms out, rising off the grass, and a row of dots like stitches. You went down to the shore with a torch and your mother's oilskin, half expecting the gulls to laugh at you.
The lights came in over the north skerry at ten past midnight, three pale discs stacked like coins, humming so low you felt it in your teeth. Nothing landed. A hatch opened and a brass lantern came down on a thin line, and at the end of it swung an envelope sealed with red wax in the shape of a heart. Inside, in your father's looping hand, were the words: I did not leave you. I only went up first.
You stood there until the lights had shrunk back to stars, then walked home along the wavy edge of the tide, reading it again by torchlight. In the morning the stone was back on the path and the sheet had gone, but the bay was full of little silver dots, and you sat down at the kitchen table and wrote back.
