Flying saucer abducting a cow
Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo
A flying saucer with orange, red and grey bands and a dark dome hovers above a black and white cow, which is lifted by red and black beams. Four or five stars and crescent moons with small cross marks sit in an arc around the saucer, joined by fine red dotted lines. Bold black outlines and flat, solid fills give the piece a classic American traditional look, centred on the subject against a plain skin background.

The cow came up the hospital car park at ten past three, unhurried, the way a cow walks when nobody has ever told it where it has to be. Nobody else on nights had seen it. Pat in Discharges was asleep sitting up in the staff room, and the porter's log for the hour had nothing in it but a wheelchair with a sticky wheel and a note about the vending machine.

Then the light came down. It was not like a torch or a lamp. It looked more like someone had poured milk through a sieve, red stripes falling in lines across the tarmac. Above the ambulance bay hung a saucer with a grey dome and a fringe of orange rings studded with little lamps, and a thin aerial on top like a bent coat hanger. It turned slowly, the way the big wall clock does when the battery is going. The cow lifted its front legs as if someone had politely asked it to dance.
I thought about Gloria, my shift manager, and the incident form. Category: livestock, unidentified. I thought about how many times in eleven years I had been told a night on the wards would be quiet. I put my tea down on the step and walked out into the light, and my boots lifted an inch off the tarmac before I could stop them, which I did not appreciate one bit.
The cow looked back at me over its shoulder, black patches and all, with the expression of a woman who has been kept waiting at a bus stop. "Don't," I said. It went up anyway. By the time I'd found my keys the saucer had slid off behind the water tower, leaving one red dot on the tarmac and a row of stars that were, I'm fairly sure, not there at dawn. Pat said I'd dreamt the whole thing. I still have the mug.
