Traditional dynamite and red flower tattoo

Traditional · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a red flower with green leaves at the top, a bundle of red dynamite sticks with a lit fuse and orange sparks in the centre, and a rope-bound lantern to the right. Bold black outlines define each motif, with solid fills of red, green, yellow and pink and some black shading. The tight crop places the design across the frame with skin visible at the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody on the Ouse would let Mags Tallow near a crate of blasting sticks, so when the lock keeper handed her three of them at Naburn, she lashed them to the cabin roof beside the washing line and said nothing about it. Her mother's red flower grew in a paint tin on the stern, and a petal had come loose and stuck to the bundle. Mags took that as a sign she was doing right.

The hulk was blocking the cut below the weir, a sunk coal barge nobody would pay to raise. Ted said it would take a month of winches. Mags said it would take one fuse and a steady hand. She waited until the moon was down, tied the lantern to the bow rope so it swung like a bell, and ran the fuse back along the deck to the stern. She struck a match and held it to the end. Then she ran. Behind her the sparks came up orange and fast, the way embers climb a chimney.

The blast lifted the water in a white shoulder and dropped it again, brown and loud. The hulk split and rolled onto its side. When the spray settled, the lantern was still swinging on its rope, and it hung there as if nothing had happened. The lock keeper's boy, who had come down to see, held up his hand and said it was the finest thing he had ever seen on a river.

By morning the channel ran clear to Selby. The only thing left of the night was a red petal drifting downstream ahead of the barge, turning slowly, as if it knew the way.
