UFO lifting a brain from a skull design
Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn design shows a flying saucer with a beam of light lifting a brain away from a cracked skull. The skull has stippled shading and cross-hatching, and a row of stars sits behind the beam, with the words LOSING MY MIND in spaced capitals along the bottom. The drawing is entirely in black ink on white paper, with the composition centred and the lettering forming a curved base.

The band at the Palais had been playing the same foxtrot since eight, and Dolores kept leaning over the bar to tell me I looked peaky. I told her it was the strobe from the saucer-shaped lamp Mr Hollis had hung over the dance floor, the one with the little round bulbs around its rim. Nobody had asked him to hang it. He said the Council had sent it back from a fair in Margate and nobody had the heart to take it down.

That night I was supposed to be meeting Ray by the cloakroom, but Ray had gone out to the car park twenty minutes earlier to show Tommy Pike his new cigarette case, and neither of them came back. At half eleven the lamp began to hum. The whole hall went quiet, the way it does before a slow number, and a beam of white light came down through the ceiling tiles and settled on the middle of the floor, where it lifted a grey thing out of Eddie Marsh's head like a man taking a lid off a pudding.
It was Eddie's brain, which I knew because he had always been a bit of a thinker, and it hung there in the beam pulsing softly while Eddie stood on the parquet with his mouth open and nothing behind his eyes. Mr Hollis fainted into the punch. The saucer drifted off over the bandstand, took the beam with it, and left Eddie swaying gently among the couples, reaching for a girl who was not there.
He danced with Dolores for the rest of the night and she said he had never been so light on his feet. I went home on the 38 and didn't tell anyone what I had seen, because by then the lamp had gone dark and I began to suspect it had only ever been a lamp.
