UFO beaming a brain above a cracked skull
Black and grey · Flash
A line drawing of a flying saucer with a light beam lifting a brain above a cracked human skull. The saucer and skull use dense cross-hatching and stippled shading, with fine outlines on the brain and teeth. The design is drawn in black ink on a plain white background, with the words LOSING MY MIND in a spaced sans-serif curving beneath the skull.

Tuesday, 4.10am. The third batch of tin loaves has gone flat again and I have decided it is the humidity, though the humidity has been the same since March. The ovens at Okafor's are still ticking as they cool, and I am sitting on an upturned crate by the back door with my tea going cold, watching the car park for the milk float that is always late.

Then the light came down. It was a flat grey disc hanging over the wheelie bins at the height of the bus shelter, with a ring of little lamps round its rim like a Christmas tree someone had left on overnight. A beam dropped out of its belly, pale as skimmed milk, and turning slowly inside it was a brain. Not a figure of speech. A proper one, the colour of day-old dough, its folds catching the lamplight. I dropped my mug and tea went across the flour sacks.
I should say I did not scream. I went for the bread peel because it was the nearest thing to a weapon, and by the time I came back the beam had narrowed and the brain was rising up into it, looking, I swear, put out at having to leave. The saucer hummed off over the rooftops towards the hospital. Where the light had touched the step there was a skull, small and yellow and cracked straight across the brow like a dropped plate, grinning at me out of the flour dust.
I have decided not to tell Mrs Okafor. She would only ask what it wanted with the bread. The trouble is, I put the skull on the top shelf to think about it, and this morning there is a loaf sitting right beside it, shaped like a brain, still warm to the touch.
