UFO beaming onto a brain above a skull

Black and grey · Flash

A black ink line drawing shows a flying saucer beaming light down onto a brain, which sits above a skull with a crooked jaw and gritted teeth. The words LOSING MY MIND run in capitals along the bottom, and the linework uses hatching and stippled shading on a plain off-white background. The drawing is in black and grey only, with the skull and beam composed centrally.

Nobody on the towpath believed me about the saucer, so I stopped mentioning it. It hung over the Ouse at Sallow Weir on the Tuesday my engine packed in, humming like a fridge left open, and it sent down a beam the colour of weak tea. The beam lifted a sack of coal off the roof of the *Patience* and carried it up without a sound. I watched my dinner go after it.

After that, things went up the beam a little at a time. First the names of the locks, then the Tuesday I'd promised to ring my sister, then the word for the long iron windlass you use on the paddles. Mrs Teale at the lock cottage said I was losing my marbles, and I told her marbles were the least of it. By August I could give you the depth of every cut between Selby and Naburn, but I couldn't have told you my own mother's maiden name if you'd held a gun to my head.

On the first cold night of October I climbed onto the roof with a landing net and a torch. The saucer dropped low enough that I could see its underside, scabbed and patient, and the beam turned blue and quiet. A small voice in my head asked, very politely, whether I wanted any of it back. I said I'd take the coal. It took the worrying too, the one thing I'd never once managed to put down, and I stood on the roof with my mouth open and nothing in it. The barge went still on the black water, and for the first time in years so did I.
