Unbreakable script on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single word, Unbreakable, is written in a flowing cursive script across the forearm. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The soft, slightly out of focus background is a blue and white patterned fabric, and a hand rests at the bottom of the frame.

Now sit down, all of you, and mind the crumbs, because this is the story of the Pinnock plates, and it begins on the morning of Ada Pinnock's wedding, when the rain came sideways off the Wash and her mother was on her knees in the scullery with a bucket.

The plates were blue and white, a willow pattern gone soft at the edges from a hundred years of Sunday dinners. There were eleven of them and a platter the size of a cartwheel. Each had been carried from Norfolk to Leeds and then down to Bristol in a wooden crate packed with straw, and each had come through with a chip or a crack or nothing worse than a sigh. Ada's aunt Vi swore they were made from the same clay as the good china at the palace, and nobody ever argued with Vi.
On the eve of the wedding the crate slipped off the back of the hired van at the lych gate. The lid split, the straw blew everywhere, and the whole village stood in the mud and waited for the sound of breaking. It never came. Old Tom Fenn lifted the platter, turned it over, and found not so much as a hairline on it. He held it up to the lamplight and read the word scratched beneath the rim by a potter's thumb a century gone, a word in a hand as fine as spider silk.
Unbreakable, it said. Ada laughed until she had to sit on the wall. The next morning she married her Daniel in a borrowed veil, and the platter went onto the trestle table with the wedding loaf on it. Years later, when her grandchildren tried to drop it on the flagstones just to see, it only rang out like a bell calling everyone in for supper.
