Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a woman's hand resting at her neck, showing a thin black ornamental line tattoo with loops and a small dot on the inner wrist. Her upper arm carries a larger black tree with bare branches and root-like lines alongside bold Roman numerals. The image is in soft, muted tones with a floral top in the background.

The toll-keeper at Greave Ford had a rule that no cord crossed the water unless it was knotted true. Ada Penhallow laid hers on his table without a word: a length of waxed linen with eleven loops tied along it, one for every summer her father had walked the boundary with her. The toll-keeper ran his thumb down it slowly, the way a man checks a sheep's teeth, and his lips moved as he counted.

The quarrel was over the old oak on the rise, the one with Roman numerals cut into its bark where the parish had marked each year's rent. Its roots lay under the east meadow and the west meadow alike, and the two villages had argued for three generations about which of them owned the grass that fed it. Her father had measured from the trunk to the water with that cord and dotted the place with red thread where the river began.
The toll-keeper reached the last loop, the frayed one, and stopped. He took out a knife, cut the cord at the red thread, and handed her back the short half. "The river is where your father said," he told her. "But you've brought me the wrong end."
Ada walked back up to the oak that evening and knelt in the hollow between two roots. She pressed the short cord into the cold earth, loops first, and went home by the east path. Nobody moved the stone at the ford, and the grass on both sides grew the same as it always had.
