Unicorn head tattoos on two fingers
Hand · Colour · Photo
Two hands rest crossed over one another, each with a unicorn head tattooed on a finger. The heads are outlined in black with a pale face, a pink and rainbow mane, and a spiral horn. The colour fills are soft and the nails are painted purple and pink.

The second unicorn had lost its horn in the gale at Frome, and Dilys had spent three nights in the back of the generator wagon with a gouge and a block of ash to make a new one. Nobody on the Gallopers had noticed the gap yet, though the mechanic from the last stop had asked twice whether the ride was safe to run with a bare patch on the forehead. She told him it was the same as it had always been, which was more or less true.

The pair had been carved by her father the winter before she was born, two grey horses on the outer ring, facing each other across the centre pole so that one always seemed to be listening to the other. He had painted the manes himself, pink at the crest and fading through orange and green to a blue that looked like the sea off Penzance. Owen wanted to sell the whole ride to a museum in Bristol. Dilys wanted the horses to stay where they could see the field.
She fitted the spiral horn at half past six, the paint still tacky under her thumb, and when the lamps came on the first children began to crowd the rail. A boy in a yellow anorak pressed his face against the brass and asked whether the unicorn was real. She said it was as real as the one across from it, and that they had always been a matched pair.
When the ride began to turn, the two heads swung round to meet each other at the pole, and the new horn caught the lamplight a shade brighter than the old. She could have dulled it with a rag. She left it shining.
