Mrs Teague had kept the bakehouse at Harrowmere since the last lord walked out through the broken gate, and she had never once let the ovens go cold. Nobody came up the hill road any more except the wool carrier on Thursdays, so when a boy in a wet cape knocked at the kitchen door on a Tuesday, she thought at first he had lost his way to the abbey.

He wanted a cupcake. He had a coin the size of a button, worn flat by a thumb, and a note in a hand she recognised as the steward's. The note said only: for the girl with the blue ribbon, when the rain stops.

She iced it anyway. Pink frosting domed over a blue paper case, and beside it she pressed a little heart of sugar from the tin she kept for christenings, because the note had said the girl liked a second thing on her plate. The boy took both and ran down the hill before she could ask which girl, or which rain.

Three weeks later the carrier brought a parcel tied with string. Inside was a tin lid, dented, and someone had scratched a small heart into it with the point of a key. Mrs Teague turned it over in her floury hands and found the steward's name written underneath, and beneath that, in the cramped hand of a child, the words: it stopped raining.
