Witch hat tattoo on a finger

Hand · Mixed · Photo

A small witch hat silhouette sits on the side of a finger, filled in with solid black ink and a pink buckle at the band. The hat is sharp and simple with no shading, and the buckle is the only colour. The hand is shown palm down against a dark, glossy surface, with purple nails in the frame.

The hat had been on the gatepost since Tuesday, and Nell Corran would not touch it. Her brother Tam thought differently. He came up the track at dusk with the feed bucket swinging, stopped dead at the gate and whistled low. "That's Mrs Hobday's," he said. "She's been looking for it all week. Says it's the only one that sits right when the wind's up."

Nell looked at the black felt, the stiff brim bent down at one side like a dog's ear, and the pink buckle at the band that Mrs Hobday polished every Sunday with spit and a rag. She thought about the eleven lambs they had lost in the first cold snap, and how Mrs Hobday had come up the lane with a flask of something hot and a sack of rock salt, asking nothing in return.

"Well, go on then," Nell said. "Take it down before it blows into the beck."

Tam reached over the gate. The hat came away with a sigh of frost, and underneath it the post had a single hoof-shaped dent worn smooth by the old ram that had rubbed there for years. Tam grinned and tipped the hat at her. "Fair exchange," he said. "You keep the sheep warm, and she keeps the weather off us."
