Unicorn in a fenced garden on an upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A white unicorn stands inside a low orange fence within a dense garden of green leaves, palm-like fronds, small flowers and a tree. The shading is soft and painterly, with fine detail in the foliage and a lighter, smooth finish on the unicorn's body. Greens and yellows dominate the background, with orange used for the fence and touches of pink and red in the flowers.

The mule would not take the switchbacks below the Kessen Col, so Hanne walked it, one hand on the bridle and the other on the roll strapped across her back. Snow had filled the cairns to their shoulders. Every hour she stopped to check the wool wrapping was not wicking damp, because eleven months of work lay inside it: forty ells of green wool and silk worked into leaves so thick a finger could not find the ground between them.

At the col a toll-keeper in a sheepskin coat came out of his hut and asked what she carried. "A garden," she said. He laughed and asked whether it was for the bishop. No, she told him, it was for a widow at Aldmere who had lost her husband and wanted something in the house that did not die in winter. He studied the roll for a long time. "Show me the animal," he said. Most people, he admitted, only ever showed him the flowers.

She unrolled it on the snow and weighed the corners with stones, and the wind lifted the edge. The white unicorn stood inside its low orange rail, head turned towards the tree. The fence was closed all round except for one gap on the near side, where the wool had been left bare. The widow had asked for that gap, and Hanne had argued against it for a month. "Why leave the gate open?" the toll-keeper asked. "Because she wanted it to be a choice," Hanne said, and she rolled the hanging up again before the cold could get at the dyes.

He stamped her pass without another word. Below them the valley was grey and brown, but the road ran down through the pines to a house with a green door. Hanne thought of the widow spreading the hanging across her own floor, finding the gap with her eyes, and deciding for herself whether to walk through it.
