Palm trees at sunset on upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
Three palm tree silhouettes in solid black stand on a sandy shore in the foreground, with the tallest tree leaning across the upper arm. The background shades from deep blue at the top to orange and then purple near the bottom, with smooth blended gradients and no visible outlines around the sky. Colour ink dominates the piece, and the photograph is taken at an angle showing the tattoo on the upper arm and shoulder of a person wearing a blue sleeveless top.

The carter Hamid came to the well at Sahl Dawa in the last of the light, his mule lame and his waterskin empty. There was nothing there but a ring of stones and three young palms that a widow had planted years before, each one a little taller than the last. She had told the town that the trees would only grow tall if a thirsty traveller stopped to drink beside them at dusk.

Hamid knelt and drank from the cupped hands of the stones, and when he stood the sky over the dunes had gone from blue to orange, then to a deep plum at the bottom where the sand met it. The mule lay down in the shade. Hamid sat with his back against the tallest palm and waited for the cool to rise out of the ground, which it did, slowly, the way the widow had said it would.
In the morning he found the tallest palm had turned in the night, its crown bent west toward the coast road, as if it had been listening to something far off. He asked the widow's son, who kept the well now, what the tree was doing. The boy said the palms always leaned toward whoever had sat beneath them and was going somewhere they had never been.
Hamid loaded the mule, tied his sack, and set off at first light. Behind him the three palms stood black against the red sand, all of them leaning west after him, and the road ran on towards a sea he had only heard described.
