The press house is finally empty. Dad's old cider mill sits in the corner under its sheet, and I have been stacking the crates the way you always said I stacked them wrong. You will be pleased to hear I did it your way in the end, mostly because the Bramleys came in early and the wasps got into the sugar before I could stop them.

I found the paper you left in the drawer by the press. Your handwriting, blocky as ever, copying out the words Grandad painted on the beam above the door: VALAR MORGHULIS, with that little ringed mark he drew before the second word, which you said meant a tap that had been turned off. I laughed at you then. I don't laugh now. He used to say all men must die so the apples would know what they were for, and then he would make us drink the rough stuff anyway.

Yesterday I climbed up to scrape the beam and the paint had gone to nothing except the letters, cut deep and black with soot from a hundred winters of the stove. I left them. The orchard will be picked by Friday, and the lorry is booked for Saturday, and I thought you might want to come and see the last barrel go out, even if you have a flat in London now and a job that wants you on Thursdays.

Come at the weekend. Bring that yellow scarf you always wore. I'll keep the kettle on and the ladder where you left it.
