Dear Nell,

The combine broke down on Tuesday again, so we've been carting the last of the barley by hand, which Dad says is the old way and Mum says is the stupid way. I wanted you to know the Harvest Dance went ahead anyway. Mrs Pargeter pinned her paper lanterns to the rafters of the Corn Exchange and the whole village turned up smelling of diesel and pomade. Your name came up twice in the raffle, which I'm told is luck of a sort.
Mr Halloran's boy asked after you. He stood by the urn for an hour working up to it, then said only that the sky over the Wold had gone the colour of a bruise and he supposed you'd like that. I said you would. I don't think I've ever seen anyone look so pleased to be wrong about a thing.
After the last waltz I walked out to the stile on my own. Something pale came down through the stubble and caught on the gate, a barn owl's feather, grey at the tip and soft as talc. I put it in my pocket meaning to post it to you, then thought better of it. You'd only say the owl was lost and wanted a sister, and we'd argue about that down the telephone like we always do.
So it's on the windowsill beside the dried sheaf for now. Come home at Christmas and I'll show you. The lanterns are still up, if nobody has taken them down yet.
Love, Edie
