Valley landscape with cliffs and clouds on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A wide valley is framed by sheer granite cliffs on both sides, with a pale waterfall falling down the right-hand wall and dark pine trees along the base. Soft smudged clouds fill the sky above, and the cliffs are built from fine hatched and stippled shading that gives them texture and depth. The piece is entirely black and grey, with the valley floor fading into darker shadow at the bottom of the frame.

The master wanted the cliffs finished before the clouds were proofed, so Ada Pell sat at the bench with a magnifier wedged in her eye and a burin in her fist, cutting one hatched line after another into the copper. Mr Thorne had brought the sketches back from the Sierra in a leather case that smelled of tobacco and river mud. Every sheet was grey pencil, and every sheet had the same gap on the right-hand wall where he had written, in his cramped hand, *water, to be guessed at*.

She worked the granite the way she had been taught, the lines close as eyelashes at the lip of the cliff and loosening as they fell toward the valley floor. The pines were stippled with the point of a needle until they looked like smoke held low over the grass. When the proof came up from the press, the clouds had printed too heavy, and Thorne swore at the boy who inked the plate. Ada only looked at the strip of paper where the waterfall should fall.
She had left it bare. No line crossed it, so the paper showed through white and the eye ran down it without stopping. "Nothing there," Thorne said, tapping the margin. "Shade it, girl, or the whole wall looks broken."
"It isn't broken," she said. "It's the only thing in the picture that moves."
He grumbled, but he let the plate go to the printers as it was. Months later a parcel came back from a stranger in Oregon, a single print pinned inside a frame, with a pencilled note asking who had engraved the valley, because the falls had looked, to him, exactly like the one he had stood under as a boy.
