Pine forest, lightning and campfire on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded forest scene of tall pine trees rises from a campfire at the lower edge of the arm and fades into soft, billowing clouds across the shoulder. Lightning forks are left as pale streaks through the grey cloud shading, and the trees use layered soft shading for depth. The piece is entirely black and grey and wraps around the upper arm.

Dear Tomasz,

The lightning came over the estate last night like someone flicking a light switch on and off, and I stood at the kitchen window on the eleventh floor counting seconds to the thunder the way your grandad taught us. Four seconds, then two. The whole car park lit up white, every bin and bollard, and for a moment I could see past the flats to the line of dark that's left of the pines on the hill above the reservoir.
You'll laugh, but I went out in my slippers to the bench by the lift shaft. Mrs Okafor from nine was already there with a flask, smoking that thin roll-up she pretends I don't know about. We sat under the overhang while the rain came in sideways and talked about the summer we all drove up to Glen Affric in Mr Pryce's van, and the night the fire wouldn't catch until your granddad breathed on it like a bellows and swore.
The pines were the thing I kept coming back to. Tall as the flats, black against the cloud, and the smoke from our little campfire going straight up between them before the wind took it. Nobody in this block has seen a tree that tall since the council cut down the poplars on Hallam Road.
I've decided I'm going back to Glen Affric in June with the bus pass and a thermos. Come with me if your knee allows. Bring the good matches.
Love, Nan
