Vegvisir compass on inner forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink Vegvisir, an eight-spoked compass symbol built from stylised runic-like glyphs, sits on the inner forearm close to the wrist. The lines are solid and even in weight, with no shading, and the design is centred and symmetrical on smooth, pale skin against a dark background. The photograph is black and white, which emphasises the crisp contrast of the linework.

Hallvard had scratched the compass three times into the wet boards before Ragna stopped laughing at him. The first attempt looked like a wheel that a cart had run over. The second had too many spokes, and the third he gouged out with the blunt end of a knife while the crew pretended not to watch from the rowing benches.

"It only has to point home," she said, taking the stylus from his fingers. "Eight arms. Each one a warning or a welcome. Put the rough water on the side where the kelp grows, and the rocks on the side that hums."
He had not believed her about the humming. But by the third night out from the fjord, with cloud sitting on the masthead and no star to be seen, he found himself holding the scratched oak disc to the lantern light, tracing the crooked glyphs with his thumb and reading them the way his grandmother had read a bad dream.
The lines held. When the mist finally tore open at dawn, the cliffs of the western skerry stood exactly where the north-east arm had promised, and the crew, who had once mocked the drawing, went quiet and touched their own wrists. Ragna took the disc back at the landing and rubbed the carving smooth with her sleeve. "Now you know which way is which," she said. "Don't go drawing it on the sail. The wind reads that too."
