Teodora had been told twice that the bronze hemisphere was finished, and twice she had found a line out of true. Master Phanes laid his palm on the bowl as if it were a sleeping animal. "Eleven hours cut into a half circle," he said, "and not one of them is honest yet."

She spent the afternoon with a bronze stylus and a dish of wet sand, scoring the fan of lines that ran from the rim down to the hollow floor. Each one had to meet its neighbour at the angle the sun would take across the sky in the month of the festival. The ring went at the centre, where the gnomon's needle would stand, and beneath it the arrow of the shadow pointed down at the hour that mattered. Dust from the harbour came through the shutters and settled on everything she had touched.

At dusk the boy from the lighthouse came asking whether the bowl could tell the hour when the lamps were lit. Phanes sent him away with a shrug. Teodora took the needle from its box, turned the hemisphere to the window, and waited for the light to slide off the water and onto the bronze.

Next morning the shadow fell across the seventh line, exactly where she had cut it, and for the first time the lines looked as though they had always been there. Phanes said nothing. He only scratched her name beneath his own on the base, in letters so small that only someone looking for them would find them.
