Veined leaf tattoo on a calf
Botanical · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A single broad leaf with a pointed lobed outline and a prominent central stem sits on the lower leg. The fine veins are drawn in dark linework, while the leaf's surface is filled with dotwork stippling that gives it a soft, shaded look. The ink is entirely black and grey against pale skin, with a dark background behind the leg.

The stock has caught on the bottom of the pot, and you are the only one awake to smell it, so the galley is yours until the watch changes. You scrape the blackened layer into the bucket and reach behind the spice tins, where the damp never quite gets, and find a leaf you have never seen aboard. It is broad and lobed at the edges like a hand held open, and someone has left it between the flour sacks and the tin of ship's biscuit.

You know the cargo: forty crates of rootstock bound for a vineyard above the Gironde, stowed under the forecastle, and the bosun swears the crew ate every grape that rolled loose in the hold. You carry the leaf to the stern lantern and turn it over. Its veins run out from the stem like rivers on a chart, and where the green has gone, the paper has taken on a grey stipple, as if a thousand pinpricks of soot had settled into it while it dried.
Sixteen years at sea has taught you to take a thing apart before you judge it, so you do. The mate's wife kept cuttings in a wet sack on the first voyage and let no one touch them, a dull story told over rum. This leaf is older than that. Someone pressed it carefully, stem and all, and tucked it where a cook would find it every night.
You dust the board with flour and lay the leaf on top, pale against the dark wood. In the morning, when the bread comes out, you will cut the first slice beside it, and nobody will ask why.
