Translucent flower and leaves on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a flower bloom with a long stem and two leaves, drawn on the inner forearm. The petals are rendered with soft, layered greys and fine dark lines, so the bloom looks translucent, like an X-ray. The flower sits at the top of the composition, with the stem running down to the lower leaf, and a plant and window blur the background.

Old Marta kept the ovens at the bakery on Wyke Lane, and before the carts came she walked the cold floor with a lamp, looking at the loaves as if they might tell her something. Nobody in the village thought this strange. She had always been able to see through things, they said, the way a candle shows through a thin cup.

One winter a boy came in before the light, his coat buttoned wrong, and asked for a loaf that would last a week. She did not ask what it was for. She held a bun up to the lamp and the crumb went pale and clear, and inside it she saw a bloom folded like a lily, with a long stem running down through the dough and two leaves at its foot. Then she saw that the stem ran on through the flour on his cuff and into his hand, and the flower opened there. She wrapped the bread in brown paper and told him to come back when the window had frost on it and the flower had closed.
He came back in March. The frost had gone and the window was bare, and the bloom in the dough had gone grey and small. Marta said the rest was his to tell. He stood in the doorway a long time, then laid a coin on the counter and said the bread had lasted exactly as long as it needed to.
Marta went back to the ovens. People in the village say the loaf is still in the cupboard above the flour bins, wrapped in paper, and that if you hold it to the lamp before dawn you can see the bloom opening, very slowly, as if it had only been waiting for the right light.
