Venus symbol on the lower stomach

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A single small Venus symbol, a circle with a cross beneath, is tattooed in solid black ink on the lower abdomen. The linework is bold and even, with no shading, and the mark sits centrally just below the navel. Fingers hold the edge of a black and white striped top at the upper frame, and the plain pale skin keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Tom,

The copper went down at Stoke Lock on Tuesday, forty-two ingots in oilcloth, every one stamped with that old sign, the circle with its little cross hanging underneath. Mr Arkwright at the wharf calls it the mark of the copper master and charges extra for it. Mum would have laughed. She always said the alchemists were just pickpockets with better handwriting.

The Mary Ellen is riding low now and she sits differently in the water, so I've had to move the coal aft to keep her trim. Dad would have done it in his sleep. I did it swearing, with the lock-keeper's boy watching from the gate and whistling the same four bars over and over until I told him to stop or go home to his mam.

Here's the odd part. Last night, tying up under the willows past Carrow Bend, I found a scrap of copper sheet caught in the tow rope, bent into the same shape, and it was still warm from the day's sun. I don't believe in signs, you know that. But I kept it in my coat pocket all night, and I still have it. Tomorrow I'll take it to the forge at Ashby and ask the smith what he makes of it.

Write back soon and tell me whether the cat had her kittens.

Love, Nell
