Heart and treble clef key on the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of the back of a person's neck shows a small fine line tattoo of a heart outline with a treble clef inside its upper curve. A thin vertical key shape with small notches extends down from the heart's point. The linework is single-weight black with no shading, set against plain pale skin with a red patterned head covering at the top of the frame.

Sit down by the bean rows, where the sun can't reach your ears, and I'll tell you about the gate at the bottom of Mrs Ashdown's orchard. It had no lock, only a keyhole cut in the shape of a heart, and the only key that fitted it was the thin iron one a travelling fiddler carried in his waistcoat, with a notch filed for every tune he had ever finished.

Nobody in the village saw him play in daylight. He came up from the river in March with his fiddle wrapped in oilcloth and asked for a bed above the forge. Each evening the apple trees leaned toward the sound, and the old men swore the blossom came out a full week early that year, which is a thing that only happens when something is being forgiven.
Mrs Ashdown had not turned that key in thirty years, not since her Walter took his last breath beside the hives. But the fiddler knelt in the wet grass, slid the iron into the heart, and the wards gave way with a sound like a low note held too long. Behind the gate there was no garden at all, only the hum of bees going quiet over a bench where Walter used to sit, and a sheet of music pinned under a stone, with a treble clef drawn over and over until the pencil wore through the paper.
The fiddler did not stay for supper. He shouldered his oilcloth, walked down through the orchard, and left the key hanging on the gatepost by its loop. Mrs Ashdown still keeps it there. Some evenings she unlocks the gate just to hear what the hinges will sing, and I tell you true, the blackbirds answer her in exactly the same key.
