Ankh and Eye of Horus on the ribs
Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A bold black ankh sits above a black Eye of Horus on the side of the ribcage, with the torso partly visible above high-waisted olive trousers and a grey crop top. The design is solid black ink with smooth, even edges and no shading, and the photograph is in natural colour with a neutral indoor background. A hand with glitter nails rests across the abdomen, and the tattoo is centred in the frame.

Dear Tom, the snow shut the Buttertubs road on Tuesday, so I am writing this by the fire at the Black Bull, where eleven of us are wedged in until the ploughs get through. Forgive the blots; the pen is poor and the ink smells of lamp oil.

The trunk came up the valley on the last coach before the drifts. It belonged to a dead surveyor, Mr Abel Crane, who had been in Cairo in the 1850s and returned with more curiosities than sense. Wrapped in a stocking inside was a key of black iron, a tall loop on a straight shank, and at the bit a notch cut in the shape of a half-closed eye with a curl beneath it. The lock had been filed away years ago, so nothing fitted it, and the landlord wanted it opened before the bailiffs came.
I spent the afternoon at the forge in the stable with a candle and my picks. Once I looked at the pattern the wards were simple. The eye-notch caught the cam inside, and the loop turned rather than pushed. When the lid lifted there was no treasure, only a folded sheet of linen with a drawing in brown ink: a cross with a loop, and beside it the same watchful eye, drawn again and again until the paper was nearly dark.
I have not told Mr Ashdown what lay beneath it, a second key, smaller and identical in every mark except that its eye is open. It sits in my waistcoat pocket now. Keep the lamp lit for me, Tom. The road should be clear by Thursday, and then I will bring you both and we will see which lock they were made for.
