Fine line black script lettering tattoo running vertically down the centre of a woman's back, along the spine.

Vertical script quote down the back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with dark hair worn up is seen from behind, showing a vertical line of cursive script tattooed down the centre of her back. The linework is thin and dark, with the words set in a flowing handwritten style that is partly difficult to read at this size. The ink is black against warm skin, and the plain tiled background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The runner beans had gone over while you were away, so I've cut them back to the cane and left the dry pods for the mice, who have earned them. I'm writing this at the potting bench because the kitchen table still has your post on it, and I can't yet bear to sort it.

Your mother's climbing rose has finally come through the north wall. Three flushes this year, and the last one smelt of the lemon soap she used to hide in the airing cupboard. I tied the new stems to the wire the way you showed me, one loop at each node, the tails angled down so the rain runs off. It is a fussy job. I did it in the evenings with the radio on low, and I got a crick in my neck that you would have laughed at.

The man from the council came about the fence. He read the letter I'd left on the gate, the lines drifting downhill across the page, and asked whether I was poorly. I said no, only that my hand had stopped sitting straight once you went. He was kind about it. He said a line that climbs wants a true post behind it, and I thought about that long after he'd gone.

So I've set a new cane by the water butt, plumb and sound, and tied the last of the sweet peas to it. They are climbing slowly, in the wrong direction and then the right one. When you come home, I want you to find them at the top of the fence where you left them, and I'll have the kettle on.
