Black and white photo of a woman's bare upper back with a small vertical line of lettering tattooed along the spine, placed between the shoulder blades.

Small lettering down the spine

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

Seen from behind, a person with a braided updo shows a short vertical column of small black lettering running down the centre of the upper back. The letters are too small and fine to read clearly in this image, and the photo is in black and white against a tiled wall. The skin is shown bare above a light strapless top, with soft natural lighting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The beech at the wood's edge has been losing its bark for as long as anyone in Harrowmere has walked past it, and every October the postmistress sends the youngest carrier up its trunk with a ladder and a stub of charcoal. This year the job was yours, because your knees were the only ones in the village that did not complain. You climbed with the ledger strapped to your back and looked at the column of scratched letters running down the grey wood like a thread someone had dropped.

They were too small to read from the ground. Up close they were worse, rubbed soft by rain, and you tilted your head until the sky swam to find the first word. It was not a name. It was a direction, the sort a farmer writes for a lost ewe: keep the stream on your left, pass the split stone, do not answer the bell in the mill.

You copied each one into the ledger, your hand shaking, the charcoal smudging the margins. The bell in the mill rang once while you worked, though no one was up there to ring it. You kept your eyes on the page and your breath slow.

At the foot of the trunk the last word was smaller than the rest, carved by a hand that had run out of patience or breath. It read HOME, and beneath it, scratched so lightly you almost missed it, was the name of the postmistress who had sent you up.
