Vertical stick figure yoga poses on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A vertical column of simple stick figures in yoga poses runs down the length of the forearm, with the wrist and a dark bracelet visible at the bottom. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading. The arm rests on a purple surface against a plain, out-of-focus background, and the composition is centred on the tattoo.

The card was pinned beside the logbook, a column of stick figures she had drawn in pencil the winter her knees gave out. Mountain, bridge, the lunge that looked like a man bowing to a kettle. She had taught them to every relief keeper the Skerry had ever had, and not one had lasted a season without learning the sequence by heart. "Your predecessor could never manage the cobra," she said. "Too proud to lie flat on cold iron."

The storm came in on the Tuesday. The Maud Harker went onto the reef a mile south, and Dan climbed the hundred and twelve treads with paraffin on his shoulder and his legs shaking so badly he had to sit on the landing twice. At the top Ada had him drop into the cobra on the grating, chin up, breathing against the cold, while the beam swept the water and a flare answered from somewhere below.

When the lifeboat had gone and the sea settled, Dan found the biro in her cardigan pocket and drew the column on the back of his own hand, pose by pose, the lines wobbling where the wind had got into his fingers. "It'll wash off," Ada said. "Then you'll have to climb back up and draw it again." He decided that was the point.
