Black fine line script tattoo of a ribbon shape made of cursive words, sitting on the inner forearm near the wrist.

Script ribbon shape on the inner wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A ribbon outline is formed entirely from lines of cursive script in black ink, with the word Smile visible at the lower left. The thin, even linework sits on pale skin against a dark background, and a blue thread bracelet is worn just above the wrist. The composition is centred on the forearm, with a hand and magenta nail polish visible at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Ruth, the rain has finally stopped, so I went out to the back wall before breakfast and found Dad's ribbon sagging again. You know the one he trained along the wire, looping from the old pear to the shed door, with the words picked out in copper tie so anyone walking the lane could read them. Half the letters have slipped since August. The S at the bottom has come loose from its nail and swings like a gate.

I stood there with the secateurs for a long time, and you would have laughed at me. He never wrote the words out for us, only the shape, so I had to work out which phrase ran where. I think it starts with smile, then remember, then something about forgiving, and a line I always pretended not to hear about it being better to forget. I still have no idea which of us he was talking to.

I tied the loose letters back with the blue garden string from the kitchen drawer, the same stuff he used for runner beans, and pinched off the suckers that had crept up over the loop. By eleven the bees had found the lavender at the centre of it, and the whole wall hummed like a kettle thinking about boiling.

I've left the rest for you to see when you come up on Sunday. Bring your gloves. The S still needs a proper nail, and I'm not climbing that ladder on my own.
