He was not supposed to be on the span after dark. Only the painting crew went up at night, and the crew had been told to stop at the second cable.

He had a rule about Nell's letters: he read them only above the water, where nobody could see his face. This one was short. The boat was sold, their father's chair was gone from the kitchen, and the cannery in Halifax had closed for good. She had written one word at the bottom, pressed so hard the nib had torn the paper, and she had underlined it twice. HOME.

The wind came up through the grating and hummed along the cables like a struck wire. Below, the bay was black except for the ferry lights sliding toward Sausalito, each one carrying someone else's kitchen. Dermot thought about the rivets he had counted for eleven years, about how every coat of orange he had laid on this steel had been meant to keep it from rusting through.

He dipped the brush and wrote on the rail, letter by letter, the way Nell wrote, with the loops left open. When it was done he screwed the lid onto the tin and left the brush balanced across it to dry. By the time the fog lifted he was already on the ferry, the word still wet on the steel behind him, going the other way.
