Vintage engraving sleeve with tree and hand
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A three-panel photograph of a full arm sleeve shown from the front, side and back. The design combines an engraved hand, a tree inside a circular frame, and blocks of printed French text styled like an old book page, with the label La Grande Aventure at the top. The work uses fine black linework and grey shading on a light skin tone, with the elements arranged in a collage across the arm.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the windfalls, they bruise like bad news. This was the last week of August, the year the Harrow orchard gave up its pears all at once and nobody had the baskets. My grandmother's cousin Bastien kept a torn book in his coat, printed by a dead man's press, and every page had an open hand drawn on it, fingers spread as if it wanted to be read. He said the hand told you how to spend your time. Plagez votre temps, it said, and nobody in the village could read the French, so they all took it to mean something different.

Bastien walked out past the old quince trees with the book under his arm and a wager in his pocket. The wager was with the miller's boy, who swore a man could not walk to the tree at the top of the hill and back before the church bell rang six. The tree stood in a ring of stones, roots spread out like a map nobody had finished. Pressed into its bark he found a coin, and beside it, in the margin of the book, a single line: Pig. 135. He turned to that page. It was blank.
So he sat down under the branches and waited, the way you wait when you have nothing left to lose but an afternoon. The bell rang six. Then seven. Down the valley the windfalls kept dropping, soft as knocking, and when he finally stood up the page was full of small writing in his own hand, describing the orchard as it would look in forty years, with his name at the foot and the words La Grande Aventure above it, as though it were the title of a book he had not yet read.
He walked home by moonlight and never once looked at the bell. The miller's boy paid up anyway, and Bastien spent the money on pears he never got round to eating.
