Rose and floral bouquet on upper back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with blonde wavy hair is photographed from behind, showing a floral tattoo centred on her upper back. The design is a bouquet of a large rose with smaller open blooms, buds and fine sprigs, drawn with detailed linework and soft grey shading. The plain pale background and white lace top keep the focus on the tattoo.

The auction bell had gone at six, and the gulls were still squabbling over the gutted pollack when Ada Penhallow tore a clean leaf from the back of the ledger. Her mother had drawn roses this way on the margins of the ice-house accounts, a fat central bloom with smaller ones opening around it like people leaning in to hear a secret. Ada had never got the petals to sit right. She tried again now, pencil soft and heavy, shading the underside of each curl until the paper went the grey of a wet slate roof.

Tom's boat, the Gannet Rose, was due in on Thursday if the wind stayed round to the west. Ada had no way of telling him anything at sea except through the tin on the harbour wall, where the fishermen left their letters under a stone and collected whatever came back. She folded the drawing twice, slid it between a sheet of waxed paper and a bag of barley sugar, and pressed the lid down until it clicked.
The Rose came in on Friday, late and low in the water, with her wheelhouse windows salted white. Tom climbed onto the quay with a face like a closed door, then saw Ada and it opened a crack. He pulled the tin from his oilskin and held it out as though it might still be warm. The rose had blurred at the edges where the damp had got in, but the sprigs were still sharp, every bud and fine stalk where she had left them.
That evening he pinned it above the chart table, out of reach of the spray, and told her the men had asked who drew the flowers. He said he had told them they were only sketches, nothing much. Ada heard the pleasure under the modesty and let him keep it.
