Violets and a bud on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a cluster of purple violet flowers with yellow centres, green leaves and a slender stem ending in a small closed bud. The petals use soft shading and highlights to give them volume, while the leaves are rendered in layered greens. The design sits on a limb against a pale blue background, with the flowers framed in the upper half of the image.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had her mother's trowel and a paper bag for the roots, and she had been told twice already that the spoil heap was no place for a girl in her Sunday boots. The heap rose behind the colliery like a loaf someone had forgotten to cut, grey shale on top, and between the stones the violets had come up anyway, purple as bruises, in clumps the size of teacups.

She dug the first clump out with the care you'd give a sleeping cat. Her father had come off the afternoon shift with his lamp still hanging from his belt and said nothing about the notice pinned by the Co-op door. He only said the bank would be quiet now, and that his hands didn't know what to do with themselves at home. Nell thought violets might help. Her mother always said they were the first thing to come back after a bad winter, which was a thing people said about pits as well, and nobody had meant it kindly.

Halfway down the heap a bud stood on its own thin stem, shut tight, green at the tip where it had not yet decided to open. She left it. She picked the flowered ones and wrapped their roots in damp newspaper, and when the bag was full she walked down past the chapel and the washing lines to the terrace where her father sat with his boots off.

At the back step she set the bag down and pulled out the one bud she had kept, the one she had nearly dug up by mistake. She pressed it into the crack of the cold yard tap where a little water always gathered. "Not yet," she told it. "Wait till the lines are settled, then you can open." Her father laughed for the first time in a week, and the bud, which was of course only a bud, stayed closed.
