Wanderlust script tattoo on a foot

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a foot resting on a printed street map, with the word Wanderlust written across the top in a flowing black cursive script. The lettering uses fine, even linework with a slight variation in stroke thickness, and the ink appears solid black with no colour. The shallow depth of field keeps the tattoo in focus while the map and toes blur softly into the background.

The chart was already pinned to the chandler's wall when Maud came back from the Dutch boats, and the word across its top was in her mother's hand, though her mother had been dead a winter. Nobody in Scarlow Quay could say who had written it. Old Tam swore it had been there since the great storm, when the harbour mouth shifted and every printed street on the wharf went to fish food.

Maud had been told the word belonged to the people of the far towns, who had a name for wanting to walk every road at once. Each evening she went down to the water and paced the distance from the lighthouse to the church bell, then wrote the count in the margin in pencil. Her pencil marks crept along the lanes of the chart like ants on a sugared step, and the gulls sat on the chandler's sill watching her do it.

On the night before the spring tide, the chart was gone from the wall. In its place someone had drawn the harbour itself in fine black ink, the breakwater, the slipway, the three steps down to the boats, and a ferry route curling out past the buoy and back again. Beside the ferry line, in the same cursive, the word had been written a second time, and under it a single figure: the number of days until the boat returned.

Maud folded the new chart into her coat and walked down the quay before the bell could ring. The lamp in the chandler's window stayed lit behind her, as it had every night of her life, for anyone who wanted to find the way home.
