Watercolour birdcage and flowers on the ribs
Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A black-lined birdcage with a finial sits above a cluster of pink blossoms and red poppy-like flowers, with a pale pink wash behind it. The linework is dark and fairly bold, while the flowers and splashes are filled with soft, bleeding colour washes that run down below the cage. The two side-by-side photographs show the same design from slightly different angles against plain skin.

The mule train left Ardenza before the frost had lifted off the cobbles, and my father walked at its head with the birdcage strapped to his pack, the brass finial catching what little sun there was. Inside sat a grey thrush that had sung three winters in our kitchen and never once sang for buyers. He said the pass would fetch a better price than the valley. I said nothing. I was seventeen and had already learned that silence kept the peace longest.

Higher up the rain came sideways and the track turned to slick shale. We stopped at a roadside shrine where someone had painted the stone walls with saints and then let the weather have them. Poppies grew out of every crack, red as spilled wine, and a cherry tree bent low over the path with blossom so pink it looked wet. When the rain struck the painted walls, the colours ran down the stone in long soft streaks. My father set the cage on the wall to rest his shoulders, and the latch, which he had been meaning to mend since midsummer, slipped its catch.
The thrush did not fly at once. It hopped to the roof of the cage, looked at the flowers, then at the grey lid of the sky. My father reached for it and I put my hand on his wrist. I pushed the little door wide and held it there while the wind tugged at my sleeve.
We came down the far side with an empty cage and no bird to sell. By the time we reached the valley floor the rain had washed the blossoms down the slope in bleeding pinks and reds, and the streams ran faintly coloured all the way to the river. My father never bought another cage. Sometimes, when the wind comes over the pass, I hear a thrush singing in the cherry trees, and I do not go looking for it.
